Finalists from the ENGG 173 efficient driving contest will face off in a real-time competition on driving simulators in the Great Hall. Driving teams will compete to consume the least fuel to traverse two courses, using strategies they derived by analyzing engine and vehicle models.

“Updated Stereovision System for Neurosurgery”

Abstract

The application of stereovision in neurosurgery allows the tracking of the surgical site throughout the procedure, thus, the craniotomy surface and location can be recorded and the information can be displayed in relation to pre-operative images. Since the current standard for surgical removal of brain tumors relies heavily on images taken before the start of surgery, it is necessary to develop an intra-operative imaging modality that can alert the surgeon to any brain deformation that may be occurring as a result of the procedure. This thesis discusses updates to an implementation of a stereovision system developed by Hai Sun. Adjustments to the core stereovision software from Sun's project have been made to incorporate a completely new hardware system - new cameras, computer, surgical microscope and navigational system. New software has been developed to replace much of the old code, providing a graphical user interface for calibration, surface reconstruction and visualization. The new system was successfully used with six patient cases, including one case where model updating was applied. Stereovision systems such as this one are particularly needed as brain deformation can cause shifts of as much as 2 cm, for which at this time only the surgeon’s skill can compensate. Although other imaging modalities have been used intra-operatively, stereovision is unique in its ability to seamlessly integrate with current technology. Multiple images can be taken throughout the surgery without interfering with the procedure.
